Blatantly pinching ex Manchester LocSec Lynn Trillo's idea we started our own series of eating meetings back in August 2003. The idea being to visit a different nationality restaurant around Notts/Derbys/Leics on the last Tuesday of each month. The events have been highly successful - though not for our waistlines! - attracting between 4 and 20 diners with the average being 14-16 each month.

Surprisingly the most popular event was our Swedish meal which was also the quickest and cheapest in the Ikea café! Afterwards there was time to go shopping before meeting up at the nearest pub to compare purchases. Other notable meals included a Lebanese meze complete with belly dancers (both professional and victims from our group!), a Scottish five course dinner in a private function room at a hotel to celebrate Burns Night, an American meal with joint birthday celebration at Hard Rock Café, and our final Polish meal where the restaurant opened especially on a Tuesday for our party.

We have visited the following restaurants:-

  • Italian meal at Antibos in Nottingham
  • Australian meal at Moombas in Loughborough
  • Mexican meal at Cactus Café in Derby
  • Iranian meal at Shiraz in Nottingham
  • American meal at Hard Rock Café in Nottingham
  • Thai meal at The Thai House in Loughborough
  • French meal at Pierre Victoire in Derby
  • Swedish meal at Ikea in Nottinghamshire
  • Portuguese meal at Nando's in Leicester
  • Japanese meal at Skinny Sumo in Nottingham
  • Greek meal at Stelianas & Saphos Taverna in Derby
  • Spanish meal at La Tasca in Nottingham
  • English meal at Harry Ramsdens in Nottingham
  • Chinese meal at Mr Chans in Loughborough
  • Turkish meal at Istanbul Restaurant in Derby
  • Scottish meal at Kegworth Whitehouse Hotel in Derbyshire
  • Indian meal at Curryholics in Loughborough
  • South American meal at Las Iguanas in Nottingham
  • German meal at Sausage in Nottingham
  • Belgian meal at Café Bruxelles in Leicester
  • Irish meal at Scruffy Murphy's in Nottingham
  • Lebanese meal at Palmtree Restaurant in Nottingham
  • Vietnamese meal at Phat in Nottingham
  • Caribbean meal at Mange Caribbiene in Nottingham
  • Polish meal at Warsaw Diner in Nottingham

Both the Egyptian and Moroccan restaurants closed down before we got chance to visit! Over the months we have tasted everything from curried goat to kangaroo steaks to sushi.

At each meal diners were able to collect a stamp for their "Globetroughers passport" and a prize of a 3-course meal for two plus bottle of wine was awarded to the person with the most stamps. This was Linda Ward who attended every meal apart from one. In addition each stamp gained an entry into a prize draw to win a bottle of champagne. The draw was made at our final meal by Guy Whitehouse (our Regional Publicity Officer). Amazingly Linda's name was picked and, having just won a prize, she generously picked another name. The winner of the champagne was Mark Graves. A deserving winner as he had also hosted two of the meals.

Thanks to everyone who took part in our "Globetroughers" series of events. It was fun!
