Seven of us met up at Wistow Maize Maze in Leicestershire on the last day of July. The attraction is only open for a few weeks each year but is well worth a visit - despite the somewhat scenic route to get there due to lack of signposts! Having observed the notices to take enough water, sunscreen, etc, into the maze with us we wondered if we would ever get out again! We collected our treasure trail booklet and the fun started. Throughout the eight acre maze there were ten boards to find to solve two separate puzzles. One involved matching up country flags. Each one represented a different letter and the ten letters when unscrambled revealed the name of a ship (Jolly Roger). The other puzzle had semaphore signs which again unscrambled to find the name of a port (Portsmouth). 90 minutes later, having found both answers, we were able to exit the maze and enter the competition to win a telescope. We sometimes lost one of our group as we followed different paths and it was only by chance we found each other in the ten foot high crop! For a change of scenery from the tall green maize and occasional sunflower we were able to climb various platforms for a birds eye view of the whole maze. Afterwards we played outdoor games such as giant Connect Four and hoopla and also visited the adjoining Wistow model village. Thanks to Rebecca Mawby for arranging the event. It was a fun afternoon!
